Making an impact

March 1, 2022/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

People don’t care about what you have to say.  They care about how what you say affects them.

I am the founder of Impactful Voices, LLC, a company that empowers women to plug into their self-confidence to get their voices heard.

As Black Woman in Corporate America, I spend a lot of time at work trying to move my ideas across the proverbial finish line.   My words often generate more questions than answers and end with befuddled looks as fellow leaders struggle to grasp my meaning or intentions. Because I felt misunderstood, I often didn’t speak up in meetings. I worked as an agreeable leader who never challenged the status quo.  Maya Angelou says “When you learn better, do better” I discovered how to “do better”.  Now, I communicate in a way that creates winning opportunities for all parties.

Your Turn:

Stop for a moment and think about yourself.  How do you communicate?  Are you aware of the energy you are bringing into the room?

People don’t want to hear what you have to say:

Here is a dirty little secret, people don’t care about what you have to say.  They care about how what you say affects them.   When you share a story that is relatable and people hear the real you, it evokes a response.  The world thrives on ideas backed by testimonials and data.  A testimonial is nothing more than a story.  Become a better storyteller and people will want to listen to what you have to say.

Let’s connect! I can’t wait to hear your story!

So, you’re interested in doing voice-overs?

February 1, 2022/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

Yolanda shares tips to help get you started in a voice-over career.

If you’re thinking it’s easy money, think again.

Starting a career in voice-over may seem easy. After all, you only need a good voice, a microphone, and a computer, right? Wrong. Sure, that is a part of it, a very small part, and the rest is simple. However, it’s important to remember that simple and easy are 2 different things. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve all been here before, wanting to do something life-changing before realizing it’s easier said than done. When it comes to breaking into the voiceover industry, there are many things to do and consider that can make or break your success. Talent is required, but it’s also about the time and effort you’re willing to put into this work. You need equipment to record, edit, and publish your voice-overs, but before any of that, you’ll need to take a class to learn the business basics.

It’s not difficult to find local classes, but keep in mind there are some pretty good online options as well, like gravyforthebrain.com, which I have used in the past.  During the class, you will get familiar with your abilities and start building confidence. It’s also a great idea to find a beginner’s voiceover coach. Dan Friedman enjoys introducing new talent to the VO world in his spare time and can be found at sound4vo.com! From there, you can decide the type of voice-over jobs you think you’ll like. This is where it starts to feel real!

You’re almost ready to give it a test drive but not yet!

You need to find equipment and a good space to record in. I know many people think that fancy equipment equals success, but that’s not necessarily true. It’s better to start small with some quality, reasonably priced equipment. There are many resources to help you understand what’s good and what’s not. Here is a quick list of products that helped me get started: Audio Technica AT2020 Microphone, Rode NT1-A, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Interface, and GarageBand. YES, I did commercials on GarageBand! LOL.  Always keep in mind that voiceover work should be fun for you, so don’t allow this career to cause you financial stress.

Once you begin earning money from booking voiceover jobs, THEN you should improve the quality of your equipment, but remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. This career does not work like an ATM. You have to start somewhere before those high earnings and consistent bookings come rolling in. Once you have a demo, hop onto a pay 2 play site like voice123.com and start auditioning. This is where the magic happens!

But wait, there’s more…. We haven’t even touched the tip of the iceberg

Aside from purchasing equipment and recording your voice-overs, you will need to become efficient in editing them, so you that you can compete in the marketplace. You also need to audition a lot, invest in continuous training, attend some VO conferences, start marketing, get headshots, take acting classes, set up your invoicing, and more. The list really goes on.  As a beginner, this is all much easier when you have a network to ask questions. That said, consider joining an online community with other voice talents. Use social media to your advantage! Start by finding a Facebook group to practice with other like-minds who will help you improve.

It’s your time!

So, you have the information you need to get started, and now the ball is in your court. You ready to do this or, are you going to just keep thinking about it? No judgment here! Take your time because voiceover ain’t easy, but it’s an absolute hoot IF it’s a fit for you.

P.S.

One last point to ponder…… when you get to audition 63 with no response, keep this in mind. Rejection is not refusal. Voiceover is art.  Your voice may not be the creative impetus needed for one specific project, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be perfect for the next! Stay inspired and be resilient.

Don’t get caught in a bunch of “Should”

January 1, 2022/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.

Today, he started a new job.  He ran his hand down his goatee making sure it looked neat.  He brushed the side-burns and moisturized the dark hair on his face.  Thinking to himself as he gazed in the mirror, “ Fresh haircut, clean teeth, crisp sky blue shirt, tapered gray slacks and don’t forget the standard spit-shined black shoes” He felt confident and ready to enter the corporate banking world until he walked downstairs and his mother said “Honey you should really cut off that beard, Banking is conservative they won’t like that look”  Then his father entered the room and said “And you should have on a suit.  It’s your first day and you want to make a good impression.  His confidence dropped and he hesitated on the stairs contemplating going back up to change.  He decided to grab a sports coat that matched well enough just in-case his dad was right.  The beard would have to wait.

Good intentions

How many times have you received unwelcomed advice telling you what you should or should not do?  We started getting “shoulded” on at an early age.  Our parents tell us what we should wear, where we should go, who we should hang out with and what types of jobs we should do.  Then we finally graduate and move into life and we begin a career and the boss tells us what we should work on and how we should present ourselves and when we should speak up and then you get married and your spouse starts in with how you should do things all over again.  We live our lives getting “shoulded on” all the time.  When we receive advice, it is usually done in good spirit, with the goal to assist us in our quest for success or personal improvement.  Rarely does a person approach us with malice when offering their opinions.

Lost

The challenge arises when the person receiving this barrage of advice loses him or herself.  How many of us started our first jobs with our parents doting on us and sharing war stories about their careers as they help us shop for new “work clothes”.   Some of us were even subjected to etiquette classes to help us appear poised so that we “fit in”.

Make your own decision

Now we evolved into this person who often feels conflicted because as we grow we begin to realize that there are plenty of people with ideas about what we should do but none of those people can live your life.  At some point, we need to decide for ourselves what we should and should not do.

In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.
