The Sky Was Bluer Today

The Sky Was Bluer Today

June 24, 2026/0 Comments/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

Have you ever looked at the sky and it seemed bluer?

Today I woke up and looked outside, and I swear the blue was bluer.

The clouds seemed fluffier or maybe it’s just that I felt better.

The world looks better when you’re rested. When you take a moment to recalibrate, readjust, and see yourself again.

Today I woke up. I got started and smiled.

I didn’t smile just on my face, but from the inside from my soul.

My soul smiled because I finally realized that the trajectory of my future is not based on people or things. It all comes back to me.

  • My energy.
  • My focus.
  • My ability to put my hand to pencil and paper.
  • My ability to turn my thoughts into action.
  • My ability to calm my greed and my desire for everything all at once.

As I stood there looking at that cerulean blue sky, I realized something.

I spend a lot of time thinking about what I want.

  • The next opportunity.
  • The next goal.
  • The next dream.
  • The next accomplishment.

But none of those things determine where my life goes from here.

I do.

Not because I control everything. I don’t.

But because I control what I do with the gifts God gave me.

  • I control whether I start.
  • I control whether I keep going.
  • I control whether I focus on what matters instead of being distracted by everything else.

Today I feel like it’s the first day of the rest of my life because today I realized that I control my destiny.

And for that, I thank God.

Because He gave me the creative power to build, create, dream, and act.

And the beautiful thing is that He gave you that same creative power too.

So, whatever it is that you’ve been dreaming about, start.

  • Write it down.
  • Take the first step.
  • Make the phone call.
  • Send the email.
  • Trust yourself enough to begin.

The sky wasn’t really bluer today.

I just finally stopped long enough to see it.

Life isn’t perfect. But progress is still beautiful.  Getinspiredagain

Dream Big

When Your Why is Bigger Than Your Fear

May 14, 2026/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

Have you ever fought against an opportunity?

I have.

For me it was my voiceover career.

For those of you who don’t know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Yolanda Spearman. By day, I’m a Director of Sales for Harley-Davidson Financial Services. By passion, I am a voice actor. In fact, my goal is to become THE go-to Black female voice actor.

But let me tell you something.

I got there kicking and screaming.

When I was 21 years old, I had a dream of being creative for a living. I wanted to earn money through artistic expression—writing books, creating crafts, speaking, performing, and building something that came from my imagination.

Around that same time, a respected radio personality told me that voiceover might be my niche. I listened. Kind of.

You know how we do.

We try something halfway. We give it a little effort. We test the waters. And when it doesn’t immediately work out, we feel justified in walking away.

“Well, I tried.”

That was me.

Years passed.

Then I had children.

And suddenly, the dream wasn’t about me anymore.

My husband – the one many of you know as “My Husband the Mechanic” – and I wanted our children to attend private school. The problem was simple.

We needed more money. About $2,500 a month more.

At the time, I was earning exactly zero dollars consistently from voiceover. I didn’t have professional equipment. I didn’t have an agent. As a matter of fact, I barely knew where to start.  I knew about one website: Voices.com. That’s it.

One evening I showed my husband the brochure about the private school.  I mused over how great it would fit our children and in the midst of the conversation my husband challenged me.

“If you get occasional calls to do voiceovers now that pay pretty well, what would happen if you actually tried?” He suggested that maybe voiceover was my niche.  I brushed him off as usual until…   he made me a deal.

He said “If I could earn at least ½ of the money needed for private school, he would agree to send them there.

In case you didn’t know… A momma will do just about anything for her children.

So I got to work fast.

  • First, I took a local voiceover class and connected with the small voiceover community here in Michigan.
  • Then I searched for a conference because I knew I didn’t have years to figure this out. I wanted my children in a new school within nine months. I found the Mid-Atlantic Voiceover Conference.

I went.

I learned.

I met people who were already doing what I wanted to do.

Then I came home and built what can only be described as a “studio.”

And when I say studio, I mean a very creative interpretation of the word.

Cheap equipment. Improvised sound treatment and a whole lot of hope.

Finally, I got on that website voices.com and started auditioning as much as I could.

  • Lunch breaks.
  • Evenings.
  • Weekends.

If there was an audition on Voices.com, I would probably submit for it.

And little by little, things started happening.

The first month, I made about $300.

Then $500.

By month six, I was making $1,000 a month.

By month nine, I was earning about $1,700 a month.

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!! We enrolled the children.

What amazes me now is that the opportunity had always been there.

  • The talent was there.
  • The interest was there.
  • The dream was there.

But the urgency wasn’t.

The full behind my dream wasn’t big enough to push me out of my comfort zone.

Once my “why” became larger than my excuses, I found a way.

  • I learned something that changed my life.
  • Most people don’t fail because they aren’t capable.
  • Most people fail because they never find a reason powerful enough to make them uncomfortable.

A dream is wonderful.

But a purpose?

  • A purpose will get you up early.
  • A purpose will keep you going when you’re tired.
  • A purpose will make you learn skills you don’t have, meet people you don’t know, and walk through doors that scare you.

Today, voiceover has become so much more than a way to pay tuition.

It has become one of the great joys of my life.

And every now and then, I wonder what would have happened if I had listened the first time someone told me this was my path.

Then I smile.

Because maybe I wasn’t ready then.

Maybe I needed a bigger “WHY”.

Maybe I needed my children.

Maybe I needed a reason to pursue my dream that was impossible to ignore.

Because when the why is big enough… you will do the work.

Life isn’t perfect. Neither am I.  But every day give us another chance to get inspired again.

Wake Up & Get Inspired by Yolanda Spearman

Wake Up

April 24, 2026/in Get Inspired, Self Care /by Yolanda Spearman

“Wake up! Momma, you overslept!”

My daughter Zoë flipped on the light and suddenly I was awake.

Now hold on a second. I am supposed to be the momma, not Zoë.

I jumped up like a five-alarm fire was happening.

“Get dressed! Get your brother up! I need coffee and you all need breakfast!”

“Okay, it’s okay”! I mumbled trying to calm myself down and fully wake up.

Smoothing down my locs, I took a deep breath and jumped into my clothes. A jumpsuit. The official uniform of a woman who doesn’t have time to think about what she’s wearing. I dashed down the stairs and immediately started multitasking.

  • Coffee.
  • Breakfast.
  • Backpacks.
  • Shoes.
  • Children.

How did I end up here?

I was exhausted and I was late.

My internal gas tank binged “just a few more tasks to empty”, but there were only five days of school left. I felt like I had just enough energy left to make it.  At least that’s what I kept telling myself.

Then my son hollered from upstairs.

“Mom, can I just stay home?”

I was so very tempted to say yes.

Not just to him.

To all of us.

Let’s all stay home.

Let’s all go back to bed.

Because that’s what fatigue will do to you.

It will make simple tasks feel impossible. It will make you question commitments you normally enjoy. It will convince you that one more thing is too much.

That’s why rest isn’t a luxury.

It’s a necessity.

You can’t go so hard that you never allow yourself to recharge. Running on empty leads to burnout, and I was so very close.

The funny thing is that later that same day, I had a voiceover session.

As many of you know, I want to be a top recognized Black female voice actor. So, showing up burned out, tired, and beat down was not the way to get there.

And then there is my day job.  I also needed to be present for my sales team.

That got me thinking.

How can you continue to give when your cup is empty?

The answer is simple.

You can’t.

You must care for yourself just as much as you care for everyone else.

After I dropped the kids off at school, I came home, canceled my morning meetings, took a long hot shower, and crawled back into bed.

Three hours later, I felt like a different person.  I was able to show up in good spirits.

I was able to get the work done. I was able to be present.

But I also realized something important.

I needed to do better.

Rest is just as important as success.

  • Sleep is sacred.
  • Time off is required.
  • Silence is golden.

So, I made some changes.

Now, I take the first hour of the morning for myself.

  1. I stretch.
  2. I pray.
  3. I meditate.
  4. Sometimes I just sit quietly.

Then at a lull in my agenda during the day, I purposely turn off my computer, close my eyes, and breathe.

  • No agenda.
  • No phone.
  • No problem-solving.

Just a moment to recalibrate. A moment to focus on absolutely nothing.

At the end of the day, I make a cup of tea.

It’s become a joke in our house.

Everyone knows Momma is winding down when I ask, “Anybody want a cup of tea?”

That simple question has become my signal that the day is over.

  • It’s time to rest.
  • Time to recharge.
  • Time to refill my cup.

These days, I’m back to being the one yelling, “Wake up!”

And it feels good to feel good.

Life isn’t perfect.  Neither am I.  But every day give us another chance to get inspired again.

Get Inspired Again: Many Hands Make Light Work

Many Hands Make Light Work

March 24, 2026/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

My garden is my joy.

Every year, almost overnight, it goes from grubby to bubbly. The brown disappears. The flowers show off. The grasses start dancing in the wind. The whole yard seems to wake up and remind me why I love it so much.

Normally, by now, everything would be done.

This year?

Not so much.

I put my pink begonias out over the course of four days. Four days! The border is finally planted. My tall grasses are doing what they always do and showing off without any help from me. Meanwhile, weeds have practically moved into my rose garden and signed a lease.

The backyard is still a bit of a mess.

The problem isn’t desire.

The problem is time.

My children are older now. There are volleyball practices, basketball games, tournaments, and family commitments. I have my day job at Harley-Davidson. I have my voiceover career. And as a mature Black female voice actor, I am blessed to receive a lot of auditions and opportunities.

Truthfully, becoming the go-to Black female voice actor is one of my biggest dreams.

So something had to give.

And this year, for a little while, it was the garden.

Now, before you think this is a sad story about weeds taking over my flower beds, let me tell you what I learned.

There is room for both.

Sometimes we think our only options are to do everything ourselves or let something important fall apart.

But there is a third option.

Ask for help.

You can expand your capacity.

Or you can recruit help.

I chose help.

My son has officially become the Mulch Man.

I am paying him to spread mulch and water flowers for me. He charges a real fee, too. No family discount whatsoever.

And honestly?

I’m happy to pay it.

Because while he’s helping me, I’m helping him.

I’m teaching him how to work. How to take pride in a job. How to finish what he starts. How to be excellent.

Now, if we’re being completely honest, “teaching excellence” is also code for me standing outside saying, “A little more over there. No, not like that. Like this.”

In other words, I get to boss him around.

It’s a win-win.

The garden gets done.

He earns money.

And we spend time together.

The older I get, the more I realize that trying to do everything by yourself isn’t a badge of honor. It’s a fast track to exhaustion.

Some of us wear independence like a trophy.

We say things like, “I got it.”

“I’ll do it myself.”

“I don’t need any help.”

But the truth is, sometimes the strongest thing you can do is raise your hand and say, “Can you help me with this?”

Whether it’s your garden, your business, your family, your dreams, or your next big goal, you don’t have to carry it all alone.

Many hands really do make light work.

And sometimes asking for help doesn’t just get the job done.

It gives someone else the opportunity to grow, contribute, and shine too.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go inspect some mulch.

The Mulch Man is on the clock.

Life isn’t perfect. Neither and I. But every day gives us another chance to “get inspired again”

When Life Knocks You Down… Get Back Up!

February 23, 2026/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

There are moments in life that can knock the wind right out of you.

Last week was one of those weeks for me.

First, I missed a voiceover session. Not because I forgot. Not because I didn’t care. I got the time wrong. I thought the session was scheduled in Pacific Time when it was actually Eastern Time. By the time I realized my mistake, the session was over.

My stomach dropped.

As a professional voice actor, your reputation matters. I immediately worried that the client would think I was unreliable or unprofessional.

Then there was the painting.

While on vacation, I placed a bid on a beautiful piece of art valued at $53,761. To win, you had to be present when the drawing took place. I was there for most of the event, but my family had booked a special behind-the-scenes tour, and I chose to leave early.

You can probably guess what happened next.

They pulled my name.

I won. And I wasn’t there. The painting went to someone else.

As if that wasn’t enough, I came home expecting good news. I opened the mailbox looking for a check from a client. Instead, I found a bill for $9,908. Not exactly the welcome-home gift I had in mind.

By that point, I felt defeated.

I sat down and cried.

Not because any one of those things was catastrophic. But because sometimes life stacks disappointment on top of disappointment until it feels heavy.

Maybe you’ve been there.

  • A missed opportunity.
  • An unexpected expense.
  • A mistake you wish you could take back.
  • A week where nothing seems to go your way.

Here’s what I did next.

  1. I took a deep breath.
  2. I acknowledged the truth. “This moment sucks.”

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop pretending everything is fine. We don’t have to minimize our disappointment. We don’t have to smile through every setback.

We can simply admit that we’re hurting.

3. Then I phoned a friend.

Not just any friend – a friend I know is capable of speaking life back into me when I can’t quite find it myself. She’s my permanent cheerleader.

  • She listened.
  • She encouraged.
  • She reminded me who I am.

Then I prayed. Because as much as I appreciate good friends, there are some moments when only God can help me find my footing again. My friend would comfort me, God would restore me and I needed both. Then came the most important part.

I got up.

That’s it.

I got up.

  • I started auditioning again.
  • I made a payment plan.
  • I let go of the painting.
  • I stepped back into my life.

The truth is, success isn’t always about winning. Sometimes success is simply being willing to start again.

Sometimes courage isn’t climbing a mountain. It’s getting out of bed after a disappointing day. It’s making the phone call.  Sending the email. Submitting the audition. Taking the next step when you don’t feel like it.

Life will knock us down from time to time. That’s part of being human. But the people who ultimately succeed are rarely the people who never fall. They’re the people who keep getting back up.

So if you’re having one of those weeks, let this be your reminder:

  • Take a breath.
  • Call a friend.
  • Say a prayer.
  • Then get up.

Your next chapter is waiting.

Life isn’t perfect.  Neither am I.  But every day gives us another chance to get inspired again.

Dream Big

When Reality Comes Knocking …

January 6, 2026/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

I laid in bed thinking about how tired I was. I had all of these dreams and goals but no energy to put behind them.

It was 3:30 a.m.

I had a plane to catch, lunches to make for the kids, a dog to take out, and laundry sitting on the edge of my bed that I promised I would fold when I woke up.

Well, I was awake, and I really didn’t feel like folding laundry. So, I found a big blanket, covered up the clothes, and left them for when I got back.

I know… bad momma. But heck, I was tired.

I got everything done (except the laundry) and made my 6:00 a.m. flight. Once I got on the plane, I realized I had a report due to my boss that I had put off, so out came the computer during my much-needed nap time.

Oh well. At least I got it done.

As I sat there looking out the window at the clouds, I found myself wondering:

When will my time come?

When would I have time for the dreams?  The books. The creative projects.  The things that make my soul happy?

Then reality peeked around the corner of the clouds and answered: “THIS IS REALITY”

I was truly offended that reality would have the unmitigated gall to show up on my flight and interrupt my pity party.

I think that’s why a lot of people die without fulfilling their dreams. Not because they don’t have dream.  Not because they aren’t talented.  But simply because they are busy living their lives.

It’s not easy to dream, live, raise a family, pay bills, work a job, and still have enough energy left over to build something for yourself.

So what do you do?

I’m glad you asked because that was my question too.

Here’s what I did.

  1. I wrote down two things I wanted to accomplish before the weekend was over.  Both were personal goals.  Not chores. Not obligations.

Dreams.

I wrote a blog I had been talking about for months.

I wrote a chapter of my book while sitting on that plane.

And then I realized something: if I could make time for that report, I could make time for me.

2. I downloaded Joel Osteen.

Yes, I needed a personal motivational speaker, and he was it. Sometimes I need a reminder that I can do hard things. I need someone speaking possibility into my ears while life is speaking responsibility.

3. I celebrated my wins.

I wrote the blog? Celebration – I get a glass of wine.

I wrote a chapter? Celebration – My family got to hear me read it at dinner.

The chapter wasn’t perfect.

The blog wasn’t perfect. But I did it.  And sometimes just showing up deserves a celebration.

No one can make your dreams come true but you.

  • Start now.
  • Start small.
  • Write one page.
  • Take one class.
  • Make one phone call.
  • Spend fifteen minutes on the thing you’ve been saying you’ll do “one day” before you spend another hour scrolling on your phone.

Because one day is built one small step at a time.

And when you look back, you’ll realize those tiny moments were actually the beginning of something big.

When that day comes, let’s also remember to celebrate the wins no matter how small.

Life isn’t perfect.  Neither am I.  But every day gives us another chance to get inspired again.

Todays Phrase for the day is: Kindness Matters

November 1, 2023/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

Recently, I attended a workshop in Los Angeles, and one evening we had a networking event. I must admit sometimes I feel like networking is a job.  Engaging in conversations is about finding the right timing to jump in, almost like jumping rope.  You stand to the side listening to the conversation go back and forth bobbing your head and smiling waiting for the exact moment when you can hop in and join the conversation.  It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. The unspoken awkwardness of not knowing which people want to engage you in conversation is palpable.  Social situations can feel daunting when you don’t know anyone in the room.  I felt that self-consciousness while I meandered around the room.

After about 45 minutes of jumping in and out of conversations with varying levels of success,  one of my friends walked into the room relieving my angst immediately.   She knew more people than I did and as such she introduced me as we bounced in and out of clusters of people.  I finally settled into a rhythm of working the room when I noticed a young lady enter.  She looked like I felt when I first arrived at the event.   She stood at the entrance canvasing the place hoping for a familiar face.  I understood that look all too well.  I recalled how I felt just moments before my friend arrived and made a snap decision to be that friendly face.  I approached her with a smile, introduced myself, and welcomed her into my circle of new acquaintances.  She eventually found her rhythm and I didn’t see her again until the end of the event.  As we walked to the exit, she beckoned me to a corner.   We exchanged information and I grabbed my purse to leave when she tapped my arm and said “I just wanted to thank you for your kindness yesterday evening.  I felt really uncomfortable when I arrived at the event and you were the first person to make me feel welcome. Thank you.”

Your words and actions make a difference in the lives of others. Even something as simple as a smile can make a person feel a little less alone in this world.

How do you touch God? By connecting with the source.

October 1, 2023/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman
Countless times in my life, I’ve longed for God to hug me or at least touch me just so I could have that undeniable proof of His existence.

Then I gazed into the face of my sleeping baby and saw the handy work of God lying beside me.  I walked into my garden and watched the roses buds burst open with ebullient color and life.  I breathed deeply at the awe of His majesty and my inhale met His lips as I realized that my very breath was a miracle too.  As I embraced the ephemeral beauty of life, God’s hand held mine.  As I marveled at the artful landscape surrounding me, God’s arms wrapped around me. As I drank from the essence of life, inhaling all of God’s splendor I realized that God was everywhere, in everything.   I realized that my humanity is an expression of God’s personality.

The rhythm of nature never ceases. It can not be impeded. If you look in places of desolation, you will discover the emergence of new life. For example, a volcano erupts and destroys everything in its path, but with time the earth heals and foliage regrows.
Similarly, a walk through a garden heals a wounded heart and clarifies the soul.  Resting at the ocean’s edge mutes the noise of life and imbues tranquility. Observing the trees as they sway and listening to the morning chirps of birds remind us that we are alive.
Peace is a tangible energy permeating our surroundings.  Make the choice to disconnect from the business we often feel is worthy of our entire being and rest in the beauties throughout the landscape of our lives.
Remember to:
1. Take the time to observe a flower not judging how or where it’s growing but that it is growing.
2. Breathe deeply where you are standing and listen to the life-giving air as you inhale.
3. Open your eyes. Search for magnificence in nature.
4. Stop and listen.  Hear the buzz of energy near you. Identify what you are hearing.
5. Close your eyes.  Give yourself the grace to allow the spirit to inspire you. Open yourself to experience God in the creation.
Connect with nature and embrace the subtle affirmations whispered by the world around you.

A powerful cup of coffee

September 1, 2023/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

Sitting in front of the camera in a meeting and being told that you were the only one left out but not on purpose…… that was my situation not that long ago.

As I sat there with that fake smile thinking a lot of things. I went through this internal rant. It started like this. “I have more experience….they left me out because… I think they did it on purpose….” Then I sat down and grabbed a beloved cup of coffee, nice and frothy, the way I like it. As I sipped, I meditated, looking out my window at my lovely red begonias and the tall grasses blooming with their brown tufts.  I realized that one person’s decision is not my destiny. Just because they didn’t think I was needed for this project doesn’t make me less. I am enough exactly the way I am and where I am. I felt I should share that today because sometimes we feel overlooked, unseen, and left out. But when we change those words to elevate our mindset, we are not overlooked….we are prepared and waiting. We are not unseen….we are yet to be selected by the one who respects our vision. We are not left out…..we are sitting on the steps of destiny and no man can take what is designed for us.

Sometimes mistakes happen to teach us a lesson about ourselves. We have the power to choose how we will react to every situation. We can lash out or we can reflect and learn.

Always remember: Attitude is a choice. Build bridges, not walls.

Now, that was a powerful cup of coffee.

Sometimes Life Sucks

August 1, 2023/in Get Inspired /by Yolanda Spearman

It’s true sometimes things happen in our lives that hurt us so much that we feel as if the sun will never shine again.

I felt like that as I watched my father die. I wanted to scream and holler as the world kept moving forward as if nothing happened. My father modeled a loving parental relationship in a way that would be envied by most. He treated me, my mother, my sisters, and my brother all like we were special. We felt invincible.

When his heart failed, and he needed a heart transplant we worried but because he was a superhero to us, we never thought the day would come when he would die. But it did. Here is the part that makes me smile. My father handled death as he would any other problem. He digested the facts. Then he made his peace with God. He talked to each of us and told us that we would be okay and he even cracked a few dad jokes during his last weeks alive. He had lived an additional 20 years because of this new heart. We sat vigil beside his hospital bed counting the space between breaths. As they lessened, we knew the dreaded moment approached but he kept breathing. The night passed and he was still breathing so we left to take quick showers. One sister stayed as the nurse came to check on him. Right after we left the nurse noticed that he had already passed on. We were mad that we missed the moment. But in his Dad way, he spared us that pain and slipped away in his sleep. See, that is the testament of his life. He loved out loud in every way. And so should we. Today, I look back on those moments and I learned that bad events don’t make a bad life.

We control more than we admit or maybe I should say more than we allow ourselves to control. Give yourself the freedom to be happy and sad, to have good days and bad ones, and never forget:

  • The community that held you up when you couldn’t stand on your own.
  • The love that got you here and will keep you going.
  • The faith that helps you put one foot in front of the other even when you just don’t know.
  • The dreams that you haven’t had the chance to fulfill.
  • The hope that another day brings.

It’s true sometimes life sucks but it’s better to have lived and lost than to have never lived at all.
